Built for the rules your firm lives by.
Intake is the first moment of a prospective client relationship. Retainr is designed around the ethics rules and privacy laws that apply to it, and we're transparent about what's in place today and what's on our roadmap.
Ethics guardrails on every call
AI disclosure
Every call opens by saying the caller is speaking with an AI assistant and how to reach a person.
Recording notice
Every call gives a recording notice at the start, in every state, including all-party-consent states.
No legal advice
The AI and our agents never give legal advice, evaluate a case, or predict an outcome. Requests for advice are escalated or deferred to the attorney.
Conflict check before facts
We collect party names first and ask callers not to share confidential details until the firm clears conflicts, which helps protect firms under Rule 1.18.
Firm supervision
Your firm approves scripts and escalation rules and can review any transcript, consistent with lawyers' duty to supervise non-lawyer assistance.
No relationship formed by intake
Callers are told that no attorney-client relationship exists until the firm confirms it in writing. Retainr is not a law firm.
How we handle your callers' information
Our platform is designed with these controls. Specific vendors and settings are documented in a security packet we share with firms during onboarding.
- Encryption in transit and at rest through our voice, telephony, and storage providers.
- Role-based access with multi-factor authentication on all staff accounts.
- Transcripts and recordings kept for a default of 90 days, configurable per firm.
- Personal details redacted from stored transcripts where our voice platform supports it.
- Client data is not used to train AI models.
- A data protection agreement (DPA) signed with every firm.
- US-based human agents.
SMS done by the rules
We send transactional texts only (confirmations, reminders, secure links) to callers who agree. Marketing texts require a separate opt-in. Every message supports STOP and HELP, and our business texting numbers are registered with carriers.
When matters involve medical details
Business law intake rarely involves health information. Before we support practice areas that do, such as personal injury, we'll put a business associate agreement (BAA) in place with our voice vendor and with your firm.
Where we are today, honestly
We're a new company. We won't claim certifications we don't hold.

This page describes how Retainr is designed and what we plan. It is not legal advice, and each firm remains responsible for its own ethics obligations.
